Many winter visitors to Istanbul ask whether a Sapanca trip is worth it in the cold season. For nature lovers the answer is yes: the forests, the lake and the mountains look completely different in winter.
What changes in winter?
The core itinerary stays much the same: the Maşukiye forests, the glass terrace over the lake and the waterfalls. It is cold, and on some days snow can fall on higher areas such as Kartepe. Some optional outdoor activities like zipline or ATV may depend on the weather on the day; your guide will tell you what is available.
What to wear
Warm winter clothes, comfortable shoes that can handle mud or snow, a hat and gloves, and a small umbrella.
VIP or bus in winter?
In winter many families prefer the Sapanca & İzmit VIP tour: a more comfortable small bus with up to 14 guests, $25 with lunch and hotel pickup. The Sapanca bus tour is the budget option at $10 with lunch.
