Pamukkale Guide: The White Travertines and Hierapolis

What is Pamukkale?

Pamukkale means "cotton castle" in Turkish: white travertine terraces with warm spring water forming turquoise pools, with the ruins of ancient Hierapolis above them.

Getting there from Istanbul

A domestic flight from Istanbul to Denizli takes about an hour and a quarter, then around an hour by road to Pamukkale or Karahayıt.

Visiting tips

You walk the terraces barefoot to protect them, so bring a small bag for your shoes. Sunset is one of the best times for photos.

How many days?

One full day covers the terraces and Hierapolis; two days with a night in a thermal hotel make the trip more relaxed.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer middays are hot, so go early in the morning or before sunset.
