A five-day family trip to Istanbul works best when arrival and departure days stay light, one day focuses on the historic city, one on children’s interests and one on a day trip. With seven days, add the Asian waterfront and an island day, or keep extra rest time. This is a suggested itinerary you can adapt, not an all-inclusive package or a promise of entry to every attraction.
Before choosing your five or seven days
- Count usable days from your flight times, not just hotel nights.
- Choose activities for the children’s ages and walking preferences.
- Keep one main activity per day and allow a meal and rest break.
- Confirm admission, transport, child seats and pickup separately where required.
Suggested five-day Istanbul family itinerary
Day 1: arrival and a short local walk
Arrange your airport-to-hotel transfer, check in and explore near your hotel. Avoid booking a fixed-departure tour immediately after a flight. Send your airport, flight number, passenger count and luggage details before confirming the vehicle.
Day 2: Sultanahmet and the historic peninsula
Group your sightseeing around Sultanahmet instead of crossing the city repeatedly. Choose the monuments and indoor visits that suit your family, leave time for a meal and shorten the walking route if needed. Museum admission and current visitor arrangements need checking separately. A private Istanbul car tour can help arrange transport; confirm the route and what your booking includes.
Day 3: one activity chosen for the children
Choose Vialand or Florya and Istanbul Aquarium rather than trying to fit both into a crowded day. Ride restrictions differ by age and height; an entrance ticket does not make every ride suitable for every child. For a different pace, consider Miniatürk and check its operating day. Our family places guide explains how to compare these choices.
Day 4: Sapanca or Bursa, with a shorter alternative
Select one day trip. Sapanca and Maşukiye offers a lake and countryside itinerary, while Bursa and Uludağ combines a longer journey with local stops and mountain scenery. The published Bursa programme is about 12 hours. If a long coach day does not suit your children, replace it with a shorter city plan rather than adding both destinations.
Day 5: a relaxed morning and departure
Keep shopping or a meal near your hotel and arrange your return airport transfer. Work backward from your flight time with the transfer team; the required road allowance depends on your airport, hotel and traffic. Avoid a distant excursion on departure day.
How to extend the plan to seven days
Keep days 1–4, move the departure plan to day 7 and choose these two additions:
Day 5: the Asian waterfront
Choose Üsküdar or Kadıköy for a waterfront walk and a local meal. Confirm whether you will cross by public transport or use a private vehicle, and agree on the return route. A car-tour price for the European side is not automatically the same as an Asian-side itinerary.
Day 6: Princes’ Islands or a rest day
Consider the Princes’ Islands shared boat trip if your family enjoys a full day on and around the water. The published duration is about nine hours; island stops depend on the confirmed operating route. Leave this day for rest or a missed city activity if the weather or children’s energy makes a boat trip unsuitable.
Shared tour or private car for your family?
A shared tour suits families comfortable with the group itinerary and scheduled return; calculate each passenger’s cost using the confirmed child policy. A private car suits families who want to agree their stops and pace in advance, within the booked duration and route. Compare the total cost of seats with the vehicle price after confirming capacity. Meals, guides and attraction tickets may be included differently in the two options.
Before choosing, ask about pickup, travel time, child seats and space for luggage or a stroller. Agree any need for breaks or an early return before booking. A private car does not mean unlimited time or free changes to the route.
Comparing service prices without confusing the units
These are individual published service prices checked on 9 October 2026, not a combined five- or seven-day package. Confirm availability and the final inclusions before booking.
- IST airport transfer: $50 per vehicle, one way; SAW: $60 per vehicle, one way.
- Private city tour: $130 per vehicle for the European route or $140 for the Asian route, for eight hours; confirm vehicle capacity and the agreed itinerary.
- Shared Sapanca and Maşukiye tour: check the per-person price and inclusions on the service page. The private Sapanca tour is a separate per-vehicle booking; check its current price, capacity and inclusions.
- Shared Bursa and Uludağ tour: check the per-person price and inclusions on the service page. The private Bursa tour is a separate per-vehicle booking; check its current price, capacity and inclusions.
- Princes’ Islands shared trip: $15 per person.
- Bosphorus Turkish night: check the current per-person price and inclusions on the service page. A private yacht is $120 per yacht per hour. These are different services.
Hotel stays, flights, attraction tickets and optional extras are not included in this suggested itinerary by default. Children’s prices vary by service; an attraction’s child policy may differ from a tour’s policy.
What to send when requesting your family plan
